So what are these big changes? It all started innocently enough when Dick came into my office 6 weeks ago and said, “I’m bored”. I was sitting at my computer wasting time and I looked at him and said, “I am too”. That started a discussion about why we are bored and what to do about it. Embracing change is always a challenge of letting go and welcoming the new. We recognize that when a person loses their sense of purpose, they lose their sense of self and meaning in life. We were at that point.
As we sat and talked about what we should do with the rest of our lives, we realized that we did not just want to just sit in our house and wait to die. We are still healthy for our ages. Our most satisfying memories of our past were those where we were with other people volunteering. Why couldn’t we do that again? When we looked at the local volunteering positions, they just did not quite fit what we want to do. Further discussion brought up the whole idea of once again selling our house, buying a motorhome and living fulltime on the road. The more we talked about it, the more appealing it became. The freedom of the open road has always called us and we decided while we were still healthy enough we should do it we should.
Volunteer positions for RVers are so numerous and varied that we could easily find our niche. We have volunteered in State Parks, in the BLM, and for the National Forest Service in the past and would love to do that again. In addition, the Habitat RV Care-A-Vanners and NOMADS fit our needs at this time. Both of these organizations do building work on projects for 2 to 3 weeks. They travel to a community and help build, repair or renovate buildings or homes for people in need.
So, the big changes are coming. We have spent the last 6 weeks thinning out our stuff, packing things we absolutely can’t live without (pictures and mementos), sending stuff to charity, getting a place to sell our furniture on commission, find a real estate agent and listing our house for sale. It has been a whirlwind of activity and our heads are spinning. We did this once before and never thought we would do it again, but never say never. Here we are again stepping into the unknown and excited for the new adventure.
Now we begin the waiting game for finding the right buyer for our house and then finding our new home on wheels. Once the house sells, we will live in our Lance trailer until we find our new/used motorhome. We do not want to do the 40-foot monster again so we are looking for a 32 to 34 foot new, used coach. It will probably take a while to find, but we will enjoy our trailer in the meantime. Besides looking at rigs is fun!
Life is best lived as an unfolding adventure. Stay tuned for updates on our journey into the exciting unknown.
